HIGHER EDUCATION

Somewhat unusual for its size, Tyler is home to 3 colleges and universities and other educational facilities that provide a very large and talented employment pool with an advanced education. Below is a summary of each of these institutions:

TJC is a two-year college with approximately 10,000 full time students. The college is accredited to award the associate in arts degree, the associate in applied science degree and certificates of proficiency. As such, TJC provides solid basics for freshman and sophomore students who plan to transfer to upper-level universities, along with technical degrees and certificate programs.

TJC’s West Campus provides corporate and continuing education training to a wide range of both companies and individuals throughout the East Texas region. For the fiscal year 2005 (September 1, 2004-August 31, 2005) 32,467 students were served through the School of Continuing Studies. Also located on the West Campus, the Skills Training Center had 464 students enrolled in the automotive program and 206 in the welding program in the 2005-2006 school year.

The University of Texas at Tyler offers 74 undergraduate and graduate degrees in five colleges. Student population is more than 6,000. UT, a proud campus of The University of Texas system, is one of the fastest growing universities in the State of Texas.

Opened in fall 2006, this state-of-the-art facility houses some UT Tyler’s high quality undergraduate and graduate engineering and science programs relevant to the rapidly changing technological world. This includes such programs as civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and computer information systems. The South Building is currently open with completion of the North Building expected soon.

As the only university-based medical center in East Texas, The UTHCT currently offers residency programs, collaborative degree programs, clinical rotations for nurses and other allied health providers, and continuing education for physicians and other health care specialists. In June 2005, UTHCT was given authority to award academic degrees and plans are to have the degree programs in place by 2007.

Founded in 1894, Texas College offers 14 baccalaureate degree programs within three divisions and has maintained a commitment to academic excellence for over 100 years. Enrollment is currently at 870.
